Xbox 360 review

Better late than never, here is my review of the Xbox 360 :)

I discovered that I had never written an Xbox 360 review! Thinking about it, it's not surprising, I bought my Xbox 360 in 2008 during my internship, in the field! At the time I didn't have a video game blog and I was still learning my future profession. Obviously a game made me fall for the Xbox 360, it was GTA 4 which arrived on April 28, 2008, a few days after my birthday :) . I gave myself a nice gift at the time, didn’t I?

Xbox wanted to mark the occasion and get ahead of Playstation by launching its Xbox 360 a year before the Playstation 3!  His strategy paid off, because the Xbox 360 was a great commercial success. It was smart to offer several Xbox 360 models at different prices. Playstation was too greedy by launching its PS3 at €600 while opposite the much less expensive Xbox 360 already offered many video game hits.

the Xbox 360 has had a long career (2005-2013) it has an incredible games library with essential video games. Even the red ring of death (I will come back to it later in this article) did not taint the success of the Xbox 360.

The look of the console

The Xbox 360 had a much more inspired design than the big black concrete block of the very first Xbox ^^. This new console was thin, white in color, and could be placed vertically or horizontally. It was relatively quiet and offered wireless controllers for the first time. The Xbox 360 boasted of being able to run video games in “HD” (high definition) at 720p or even 1080p (full HD). IN France we were just starting to equip ourselves with “HD ready” TVs; the Xbox 360 arrived at the right time. With the first Xbox 360 models we connected the machine in “HD” with the YUV cable, then in 2007 they added an HDMI port to the new consoles in order to standardize the connection between the machine and the TV.  During its long career, Microsoft offered new Xbox 360s in different colors (but also collector's editions), with much larger hard drives. Namely, we could also change the facade (template) of the Xbox 360 in order to extremely personalize our Xbox console ^^

Now let's talk about the Xbox 360 controller. In my opinion, it is the most ergonomic controller on consoles. It's no surprise that Xbox is using this very good model in the different technical developments of its Xbox One and Xbox Series S/X pad.

The Power of Xbox 360

For once, the Xbox 360 actually offered magnificent games in HD. This console was very powerful, it was not uncommon to find that multiplatform games ran (much) better on Xbox 360 than on PS3. Certain games made the machine boil, I'm thinking in particular of Dead Rising which was very resource intensive. This zombie killing game also killed the Xbox 360…

And yes the famous red ROD (ring of death)! Like many, many other players, I was a victim of the red ring of death. Basically this indicated that the console was dead (overheating). What a fright! Fortunately, Microsoft took care of all defective consoles free of charge (even outside of warranty) by replacing them with new, much more reliable consoles with better cooling.

In the meantime, the Nintendo Wii arrived and crushed the competition with its small console with motion detection via the Wii-Mote.  In order to compete with this Wii, Xbox had the idea of ​​the Kinect! Against all expectations, the Xbox 360 Kinect was also a great commercial success! The video game Dance Central, in particular, made motion gaming credible! Many other original games joined the Kinect camera (sport, dance, boxing, leisure, adventures) which was good at motion detection. It’s true that we needed space to play, but it was very fun! I sweated with this Kinect but above all I had a lot of fun! I regret that Xbox no longer uses this innovative accessory at all.

Xbox Live clearly took off with the Xbox 360! More and more video games were being played online, and the quality of service was very strong. It had nothing to do with the risky online game of the Playstation 3. On Xbox 360 we unlocked “achievements” in-game, and we challenged each other with friends with the scores of our gamertags. It was the golden age of online console gaming in my opinion. There were not yet all the problems that we unfortunately encounter today (trolls, harassment, insults, cheating…)

The 360 ​​game library

I wouldn't even know where to start! the Xbox 360 has so many video game hits. Instinctively, I think of GTA IV, GTA V, Bully, Red Dead Redemption, The Witcher II, Alan Wake, Dead Rising, Bioshock, the Mass Effect saga, Batman Arkham City and the other variations, Gears Of War, Fable 2 and 3, Oblivion, Skyrim, the entire Halo saga, Street Fighter IV, Forza Horizon, and Motorsport, Bayonetta, Call Of Duty, Fifa, farcry, the Rockband and company, the Assassin’s Creed, Sonic Génération… This game library was crazy, completely crazy!

Frankly, the Xbox 360/Playstation 3 generation is for me the golden age of video games! The hits on these consoles came one after the other at breakneck speed for both Playstation and Xbox, but above all the games were innovative!

Xbox 360 today!

Well frankly, almost 20 years later, this Xbox 360 is still worth the detour! It has an incredible games library, visually the games are far from ugly thanks to its HD definition, and Xbox Live still works on it! Obviously if you want to acquire an Xbox 360 in 2023, I recommend that you take the latest models. Indeed they have a much larger hard drive, an HDMI port, Wifi, but above all they will not break down like the first models with the red rings of death!

For me, the Xbox 360 is clearly the best console released by Microsoft! The very first XBox was a great discovery, but the Xbox 360 is a festival of video game hits! It’s a series of excellent quality video games! When I see how Microsoft messed up with the Xbox One, I hope that the Xbox Series S/X will challenge the unbeatable Xbox 360! Make me dream Xbox! I want an unforgettable Fable and a Starfield that everyone agrees with!
