The ideal for consoles from the 8-bit to 128-bit generations (from the Nintendo Nes-Sega Mastersystem to the Dreamcast PS2 XBox Gamecube…) is to find a good old cathode TV! For what? Because the rendering of these old game consoles is frankly horrible on modern Full HD televisions and even worse in 4K. Old consoles are not suitable for these TVs. Which TV format to choose?
Without a doubt a 4/3 format! Only certain games from the latest consoles (PS2 XBox) are 16/9 compatible but there are not many of them. Strongly favor the 4/3 format, because in 16/9 your games will be distorted and certain display areas will be missing.
What type of screen to choose?
The first cathode ray TVs had a “curved” screen (rounded shape) which tended to distort the image of the games. The ideal is a very flat screen widely used with cathode ray TVs such as Sony Trinitron LG Flatron Philips Thomson and company. Don't forget to choose an RGB compatible cathode ray TV, it's very important to have an optimal image on the television, and above all ideally having several SCART and RCA sockets!
Choose the frequency of your TV carefully
Although not numerous, some cathode ray televisions are only 50Hz compatible. Choose televisions compatible with 60Hz, your games will then be in full screen (goodbye black bands) but above all they will be much faster! Be careful with 100Hz cathode TVs, even if the image is beautiful on them, shooting games with gun controllers will not work!
Where to find your cathode TV?
It’s honestly not complicated! Several possibilities are available to you! Either in garage sales, or in second-hand purchase and resale shops (such as cash express, cash converter, barter), or even on bulky days! AND yes, many people still have functional CRT TVs and decide to get rid of them! In any case, don't pay more than 10 to 30€ maximum for your cathode TV!
