What is the best game console emulator?

This is a relevant question!  I will try to answer it by comparing my different video game console emulators!

Before answering this question I would like to remind you that it is mandatory to own the original games that you wish to emulate under penalty of possible sanctions. After having tested quite a few emulators on different media (kickstarter project, portable console, Android tablet, raspberry…), I suggest you sort it out and find together the best emulator for video game consoles!

THE Sony PSP

Surprisingly, I started to become interested in emulating old video game consoles a few years ago when I discovered that my Sony PSP was very good at it. Of course at the time it was necessary to flash the console (be careful of the risk of permanently bricking the console during handling). With the flash of its firmware, it could easily emulate video games up to the 32-bit generation (master system, NES, megadrive, gameboy, game gear, super NES, neo geo, amiga, PSOne games). Beyond that, N64 games launched but were slow. The PSP can therefore be a very interesting choice given its low price for pocket emulation, but also thanks to its manufacturing quality and its perfect screen for oldies. But be careful because you have to tinker with the console!

Chinese portable consoles

It's easy to find Chinese consoles on the internet with a design largely redesigned for the PSP and 3DS. These low-cost consoles, worth between €30 and €60, already have emulators, or even integrated games (completely illegal element)! Be careful though with the poor manufacturing quality of these Chinese consoles, they break down easily, but are above all fragile (stuck buttons, low-end directional cross). In addition, these Chinese consoles rarely (if ever) benefit from software updates, in order to correct bugs. I acquired the Dingoo A320 and this Chinese portable console, despite these few qualities (bright screen, long-lasting battery, nice design) has all the faults that I have listed, such as the absence of updates for bugs and blatant fragility. Think carefully before investing in a Chinese console!

The Ouya game console

Does this console mean nothing to you? But yes! Think! This Ouya was one of the biggest successes of the Kickstarter crowdfunding platform! Attractive project, nice design, the beginnings of this Ouya seemed promising! It was one of the first Android consoles, with a fast configuration. Unfortunately the fairy tale did not last long. Faulted by a capricious and slow controller (I have never seen a controller so unresponsive…) it was also sorely lacking in video games, but above all in financial support! Fortunately, emulators were available to compensate for this lack of games! The Ouya was largely capable of emulating any console up to the Nintendo 64 thanks to its muscular configuration. The Ouya was unfortunately a failure. Maybe she was too ahead of her time.

Portable consoles (or tablet) under Android

These portable consoles and tablets running Android represent the new Eldorado of retro gaming, thanks to Google's operating system, aptly named Android! And yes on Android there are hundreds of free video game console emulators! As long as your portable console or Android tablet has a correct or even muscular hardware configuration, you will certainly be in heaven! However, pay attention to the manufacturing quality of the tablet, as well as the screen and the layout of the gamepad. If you are targeting this type of product, choose wisely, but to have a quality portable android gaming console or tablet you need to spend at least €100! The Raspberry Pi 3

If you opt for a Raspberry Pi 3, you need to add a small case, a power cable, an HDMI cable and a Micro SD card for €60, the equivalent of the Nintendo Classic Mini. All you have to do is very easily install the RecalBox operating system which will allow you to play your vintage video games on an HDTV, thanks to quality upscaling, video filters, backups, screenshots and even local multiplayer! RecalBox emulates a lot of game consoles up to the Nintendo 64. Best of all, Recalbox integrates the excellent Kodi software to watch your favorite films! If you like to tinker and go even further, install Retropie, it seems even more advanced than RecalBox! The Raspberry 3 with its excellent value for money and a very good solution for quality retro gaming even if it does not offer the charm of the Nintendo Classic Mini!

The Nintendo Classic Mini

Nintendo hit the nail on the head with its Nintendo Classic Mini! Aware of the great marketing potential of retro gaming, Nintendo has put its Nintendo Classic Mini on sale! This is a miniaturized and modernized version of the venerable Nintendo Nes! Featuring 30 quality games, and a display largely optimized for HD TVs, this Nintendo Classic Mini is a pure marvel for fans of oldies games, but also for collectors! The games are sublimated, it is possible to save your games at any time and the old school effect is guaranteed! Frankly at 60€ it would be a shame to miss out on this Nintendo Classic Mini which is a great collector's item!

The Nvidia Shield

The famous American firm Nvidia has been offering its Nvidia Shield system for several years! These are Android video game consoles available in portable and home versions. With its hardware experience, the Nvidia Shield is, in my opinion, one of the best solutions if not the best solution for enjoying retro-gaming, but also recent video games! As explained previously, the Nvidia Shield runs under the Android operating system. The Shield has a very good configuration allowing 4K display and streaming of PC games! But also a cloud gaming system allowing you to play the latest video games! This console is also an excellent media center with Netflix Kodi and everything you need to have fun from your living room! Nvidia provides very good hardware and software monitoring on its Shield. The only problem is its price: €200… It is very likely that I will invest in this console soon! Looking forward to the sales!

Other solutions

There are a lot of other solutions to enjoy these oldies games! Both PCs and MACs with dedicated software can emulate old video game consoles. Even better, some websites also offer to play directly on their sites! To conclude, long live oldie games!
