Unlimited 4G Box modem test NRJ Mobile

Not having the chance to have optical fiber in my apartment in the Paris region, I tried the NRJ Mobile unlimited 4G Box offer, here is my test!

And yes, unfortunately for me, quite astonishingly, the priority of our building refused the installation of optical fiber! Because of this we are stuck with a low-end ADSL connection, 12 megabytes for download and only 1 mega for upload. Needless to say, my video game downloads on consoles and PCs take a while, and my internet connection quickly becomes saturated. Faced with this state of affairs, I decided to test an attractive offer of unlimited 4G Box NRJ Mobile, once eligible in the Paris region (offer normally reserved for rural areas). Before anyone asks me, this is a package of €30/month and I am committed for 12 months.

We plug in the Box!

It couldn't be simpler, no need to contact a technician at home or wait for ADSL lines to be connected. Simply insert the sim card into the Alcatel 4G Box modem and plug it into a power outlet. After a few basic settings (admin settings, wifi code, DHCP, upnp etc.), the modem is operational immediately! This Alcatel modem is very basic, it has 2 Ethernet sockets and it is possible to add 2 4G antennas (optional). Personally, I plugged all my devices (PS4, Xbox One, Switch, Nvidia Shield, PC, etc.) into the ethernet ports of my switch which I connected to the modem via the RJ45 socket.

Onward to 4G data!

Needless to say, since I've been using this 4G Box Unlimited NRJ Mobile modem, data-wise I think I must give the operator a cold sweat, but after all it's unlimited, right 🙂? The first bandwidth tests that I carried out show that already at the upload level I am on average at 20/30 megas whereas before I had only 1 mega with my ADSL offer. What a joy to be able to quickly upload your photos to the drive but also to be able to play the PS4 remotely from my workplace (during my break eh ^^)! In terms of downloading I'll be honest it's quite unstable I manage to go up to 80 megas but a few minutes later I find myself at 10 megas… In any case, on average it is much faster than with classic ADSL! I download my games and films much faster than before. But be careful because it's not very stable, so be careful with ping and online games! Also note that this modem is dependent on the quality of the 4G network! Some days it happens that the 4G network (SFR 4G) encounters disruptions and as a result the internet is of average quality at my home. Also be careful before subscribing to this type of unlimited 4G modem offer, check the network coverage in your area. This is important because if you already have poor 4G reception at home, there is no point in subscribing to this type of package.

Here is my verdict!

I'm not going to beat around the bush, this 4G Box offer with the Alcatel modem does the job. This unlimited 4G internet displays much better performance than with my classic ADSL, that’s obvious. Upload 20 to 40 times faster and download at least 2 times faster. My game downloads and console updates are faster than before and that's a good thing! On the other hand, when it comes to online gaming, you should not hope to compete since the ping is often unstable. Clearly this unlimited 4G Box helps me out well and replaces my ADSL offer without any problem. The icing on the cake is that I can use this modem anywhere in France! But hey, we're not going to lie, I can't wait to try fiber optics one day!!!!
