System Shock review on PC

I present to you my review of System Shock on PC!

1994… It’s not getting any younger! So we go back in time with thisSystem Shockremastered from Night Dive Studios. For the record, System Shock was an action-adventure and role-playing video game developed by Looking Glass Studios; At the time, the game was considered a classic of the genre and was praised for its captivating story, innovative gameplay and immersive atmosphere. It was also one of the first gaming experiences to use real-time 3D graphics and role-playing mechanics. System Shock was followed by a sequel, System Shock 2, in 1999

Well, let's get back to business, with this System Shock 2023 edition brought up to date visually.  “Please note, this is not really a remake, but a graphic overhaul. The game remains almost identical to what it was at the time, with the same gameplay constraints, a certain heaviness, and mechanics that are now outdated. It can be tough but still playable. »

A small revolution in action gaming at the time, and ancestor of Bioshock, Prey and Singularity, System Shock is a name that resonates in the memory of players. (well the old players…)

So what does System Shock mean?

You are a hacker captured with the aim of stealing from the Trioptimum company.
Quickly arrested and taken to Citadel station, you are asked to remove the ethical constraints on the station's Shodan artificial intelligence. Threatened, you are offered a deal before a guard knocks you unconscious. We wake up alone, in an incubator and we quickly understand that something “not fun” has happened in the station.

Let's be clear, I haven't played the 94 version, so the nostalgic side has no effect on me but we feel, from the start, the charm of old games. The instructions are as simple as the main thread, a backpack with limited space and few resources. There are no markers on the map and no instructions on how to proceed. It’s a little rough but remember it’s a rework not a remake!

The fights are dated, the blows lack impact and we feel a kind of gap between the initial action and the reactions of the enemies. Difficult, for example, to be able to dodge attacks in these cases.

Let's forget that, because the essence of the game is exploration (Without a big arrow for direction!). It’s a maze of corridors and rooms that will make you lose your mind, with some back and forths that are obligatory. Besides, once you get to the elevator, you're pretty proud of yourself.

The graphics and design are good, a mix of retro and modern. Except the monsters which are not great and blurry.

As for bugs, nothing to report during the test and during my various gaming sessions, it was perfectly playable. In addition, System Shock is capable of running on modest PC configurations, that's a good point.

The soundtrack is rather anecdotal with a mention for the voice of the very creepy AI.

For the lifespan, only solo, it varies between 6 and 20 hours.

My verdict

In short, System Shock is an old-school game, it shines through in this one like the gameplay or the level design. If you're a fan from the start, go for it. If you're new to the game, I'm more reserved in my opinion.
