Sonic Origins Plus review

Nothing like a Sonic compilation to celebrate the Blue hedgehog's birthday! Here is my review of Sonic Origins Plus on Xbox!

There you go, I suspected it, I received a copy of Sonic Origins Plus on Xbox yesterday (thanksPlaion^^), and I binge-watched the first Sonic The Hedgehog from the Sega Mega Drive all night. I thought I would only play for a few minutes and ended up playing until late at night to finish this Sonic :) . As a reminder, a Sonic video game is basically a 2-dimensional platform game, very fast, where our reflexes and anticipations are put to the severe test.

Sonic Origins Plus is a compilation featuring Sonic Origins which was only available digitally in 2022. This time Sonic Origins Plus arrives in physical version and offers a magnificent reversible cover in order to obtain a Sega Mega Drive game box with the most beautiful effect! Obviously this Sonic Origins Plus does not only offer a physical version of the game, it also comes with 12 Sonic video games from Sega's 8-bit portable console, the famous Game Gear (the battery eater ^^).

Another new feature in thisSonic Origins Pluswe can play with the character Amy Rose but also Knuckles (without forgetting Tail’s) in Sonic The Hedgehog, Sonic 2, Sonic 3 & Knuckles, and Sonic CD. In short, there's plenty to enjoy for any self-respecting Sonic fan!

Sonic Origins Plus is also intended to be more accessible for beginners thanks to the addition of “anniversary mode”. We find ourselves with an unlimited number of lives, but also with tokens which allow us to redo the special stages in order to more easily take away the chaos emeralds. It's cool because we can more easily discover the true endings of Sonic video games. This birthday mode allows my children to discover the Sonic games of my childhood and needless to say, they are having a blast! The magic of an old video game still works even 30 years later! Well I reassure you, in order to satisfy everyone, we can play in classic mode in order to find the same difficulty of yesteryear.

Sonic Origins Plus also offers a “Boss Rush” mode where we continue Boss fights against Eggman or Robotnik for short :D. There is also a mission mode where you can chain together different challenges, but also a very careful story mode (the common thread is ecology and animals) with magnificent animated passages where you follow the different Sonic video games in logical order! AND let's not forget that in Sonic Origins Plus we can take advantage of the museum to learn more about our favorite blue hedgehog!

Now let's talk Technical regarding this Sonic video game compilation! Sonic The Hedgehog, Sonic 2, Sonic 3 & Knuckles, and Sonic CD from the Sega Mega Drive catalog have benefited from special care so that they work perfectly on our modern 4K televisions. You can play in 16:9 full screen mode perfectly smoothly. As explained above, Team Sega implemented Sonic animations in the game in order to add a beautiful setting to the blue hedgehog video games. For purists we can also play the old fashioned way in 4/3 mode, that's how everyone is happy 🙂 Xbox pad in hand, Sonic moves perfectly well, it's all good for the 4 Sonics on the Sega Mega Drive.

Regarding the Sonic compilation from the Sega Game Gear, that's another story. I admit it’s a bit painful for the eyes on our modern TVs. Instead of Sega I would have integrated the Sonic compilation from the Sega Master System which offered better resolution and fluidity. And yes, the Sonic compilation of this Sonic Origins Plus, from the Sega Game Gear, offers exactly the same experience as at the time of our battery-eating portable console, framerate drops included!!! In short, it's copy/paste with the qualities and defects of the Sonic JVs of the time! But hey, I'm still happy to discover these Portable versions of Sonic The Hedgehog, because at the time a Game Gear cost an arm and a leg (and lots of batteries!!!)

What else can I say about this Sonic Origins Plus? Ben being a fan of this saga since my childhood, I am happy to be able to play it on our modern consoles and on our 4K TVs. Even 30 years later I still get chills with the controller in my hand! The sensations are always exhilarating! I dream that one day Sega will integrate all of the Sonic video games (8bits/16bits/32/128bits and beyond), in a single version, but hey I’m dreaming :)

My verdict

Sonic Origins Plus is a neat compilation of Sonic video games from the Sega Mega Drive. In addition to being neat, it is much more accessible thanks to its anniversary mode, for beginners, and for those who want to discover the Sonic The Hedgehog games. Sonic is my favorite video game so obviously my opinion will probably lack objectivity and perspective, but really even 30 years later, I'm still having as much fun with this Sonic Origins plus compilation! As with the video games Tetris and Mario, Sonic The Hedgehog, to try it is to adopt it! Looking forward to the ultimate compilation with all the Sonic games, we can always dream, right???
