Sonic Frontiers Review

Finally our blue hedgehog is back! Here is my review of Sonic Frontiers on Playstation 5!

After getting started during my trip to Paris Games Week RESTART, I couldn't wait to play Sonic Frontiers at home in the best possible conditions! THANKSPlaionfor sending me a Playstation 5 version of the game, thanks to this support, I can offer you my review of Sonic Frontiers!

A question must burn your lips? “So it is goodSonic Frontiers ou PAS“? I imagine that many players are wondering, especially after the bashing of the game relayed by numerous tests in the French video games press. What impressed me was the difference between the French JV media tests which reviewed the game, and the 95% very positive opinions (average of thousands of comments) on Steam in particular. When the Steam reviews are excellent we can already say that this game smells good. Moreover, the international video games press has distributed much more coherent notes which come close to the opinions of the players. Why such a difference between players and the media? I have my own idea... As usual, our video game specialists focus on the graphics. These days, for a game to appeal to our video game professionals, the game must be technically impressive. In short, we need a AAA Pop Corn cinema video game, as Playstation knows how to do so well, with the superb games Uncharted 4, The Last Of Us, God Of War, Spiderman… In short, a game that will amaze our specialized media.

You might as well not beat around the bush, Sonic Frontiers won't wow you visually. Graphically this Sonic blows hot and cold. Open world objects (springboards, rails, elevators, climbing walls) appear suddenly on the screen in the form of “popping”.  We're not going to lie to each other Sonic Frontiers does not exploit the capabilities of the consoles of the moment, namely the Playstation 5 and the Xbox Series S and  Fortunately we can still play Sonic Frontiers at 60 frames per second, and for me that's a big plus. Are we playing Sonic or not? Sonic has to move very, very quickly, and the 60fps is a pure joy in-game! In addition, the different islands that we will travel to are pleasant to explore. It really is a huge play area for our blue hedgehog, and I have a lot of fun during each session! For me this is the main quality of a video game! You have to have fun, have a good time, and this Sonic Frontiers is a treat in terms of gaming pleasure!

Yes, I'm not ashamed to say it, I'm having a lot of fun with this Sonic Frontiers video game! This is the best 3D Sonic since Sonic Adventure on Sega Dreamcast! The pad-in-hand gameplay is very good, we explore the island at lightning speed. We can easily tackle springboards, rails, loops, elevators and climbing walls! Sonic goes fast, he goes very fast ^^! He learned some new moves! Sonic Frontiers is inspired by the films released in the cinema! He can run a loop, he kicks, he does combos, in short, Sonic is in better shape than ever! The enemies are also varied and some of them are impressive!  Obviously Sonic Frontiers does not forget to offer classic courses in 3D but also in 2D. These courses allow you to earn keys but to obtain them all you have to take on challenges! When you play these courses, I think many memories will come back to you^^. Sonic Frontiers, in many passages, pays homage to the old Dreamcast games (but also Sega Mega Drive) of the saga, I had a little tear in my eye. I no longer count my hours on Sonic Frontiers, I just have to be careful not to spend a whole day there!   Usually I don't do it in a game, but I admit I sand every island visited in Sonic Frontiers. I try to solve each puzzle, I try to take on each challenge, and I try to find all the little lost inhabitants.  Yes I'm repeating myself but I have a lot of fun in this game :p

Good scenario level I'm not going to talk too much about it, it's very classic eh ^^ Sonic and his friends are the good guys, Eggman and his robots are the bad guys. Sonic Team is not reinventing the wheel! I found Sonic's French voice strange, he speaks as if he had a blocked nose! Did he get the flu or something??? I noted that Sonic Frontiers is (largely) inspired by Zelda Breath Of The Wild. Between the exploration, the climbing, the puzzles, the day/night cycle with certain eventful nights... But frankly this Zelda BOTW inspiration suits Sonic Frontiers very well, it was a risky bet but it works! What else can I say about Sonic Frontiers??? Well, I'm having fun like I did when I was a teenager with Sonic Adventure on my Sega Dreamcast! Yes, I'm repeating myself, but what a blast this Sonic Frontiers is! It is a little repetitive in length but given the pleasure it brings to the game we don’t pay attention to it.

My verdict!

I strongly encourage you to play Sonic Frontiers, or at least try it! Don't listen to the jaded French video game press who only swear by the graphics and aesthetics of a game. Players' opinions fool no one! 95% very positive reviews on Steam is generally a (very) good sign. If you are able to get past the popping of the game, you will have a blast with this Sonic Frontiers! The gameplay of this Sonic 3D is very good and addictive! Exploring the islands is enjoyable, the challenges are numerous, the puzzles are fun, the fights with enemies are Dantean! Then our Sonic goes quickly but then very very quickly :) In short, this Sonic Frontiers with Breath Of The Wild sauce is in my opinion the best 3D Sonic!  Although it may not be graphically beautiful, Sonic Frontiers is a masterclass in gameplay and gaming pleasure!
