Sega Megadrive Mini HD review: Finally worthy of a Sega console?

Today I offer you my review of the Sega Megadrive Mini HD! I let myself be tempted by this new Sega Megadrive Mini HD model, to take over from my aging Sega Megadrive! It finally offers an HDMI output and the company behind this console AtGames seems to have corrected its youthful mistakes…

However, I had promised myself not to buy any more AtGames consoles following my previous test of the AtGames Megadrive Mini. Indeed this version was catastrophic in every way. Disgusting and blurry image. Poor game emulation, unusable infrared controller and questionable manufacturing quality. Despite this, the company AtGames offers a revised and corrected model of its Sega Megadrive Mini, which is finally in HD, I want to say hallelujah!!!

A finally worthy image on a Full HD TV!

And yes, this Sega Megadrive Mini HD is equipped with an HDMI port which offers a finally clean 720P image! The games also seem to run at 60hz which is a very good thing! A nice little addition too, this console offers a cathode ray tube filter which gives a very pleasant retro image, perfect for rediscovering the sensations of the era!

The new Sega Megadrive Mini HD finally almost looks like a real Sega Megadrive of the time in a miniaturized version of course! It's a shame, however, that the At Games slogan spoils this nice design a bit. I also noted that the manufacturing quality seems better than on the previous model, so much the better!

In addition to offering 85 games in emulation mode, it is also possible to insert Sega Megadrive game cartridges, and that's really cool! This allows us to put our aging consoles to rest! It is also possible to save these games at any time, which is a big plus!

Is the controller finally reliable?

So I'll be honest, the controller finally no longer has any communication problems! However, I still noticed a slight response time, which is problematic for games where speed and responsiveness are mandatory! In addition, but frankly what an idea to have to insert batteries into a controller in 2017! The highlight of the show is that you have to unscrew it to insert the batteries! No but LOL! Fortunately we can use the original wired Sega Megadrive controller, which corrects all the faults and allows you to rediscover the gameplay of yesteryear!

And no, the company At Games still cannot achieve the quality label of a Sega or Nintendo console, let me explain. To begin with, the interface of this console is far from perfect. It's messy and poorly configured, it's frankly not easy to understand but hey, fortunately after a few minutes you finally get used to it! Then frankly what is the point of integrating 85 games for in the end a dozen cult games…  Then I don't understand that in 2017 the emulation of Sega Megadrive games is not perfect on this console! A raspberry or an Android system can do this without flinching and unfortunately on this Sega Megadrive Mini HD, that is far from being the case. In a game like Sonic I noticed micro-stutters and it's a real shame for a game that favors speed…

Well in the end, is this console good or not?

This Sega MegaDrive Mini HD progresses, fortunately, compared to its poor previous model. It is finally capable of displaying beautiful images in 720P on our modern televisions (without forgetting the very vintage cathode filter :p) and also has much better manufacturing quality in addition to having a nice look! The big plus of this console obviously is being able to insert Sega Megadrive game cartridges, and casually it's really nice! What a great idea, too, to be able to save your game at any time! On these points, the Sega Megadrive Mini HD from AtGames is worth it. On the other hand, its controller is still not perfect, a slight latency degrades the gameplay. It will therefore be necessary to favor an original wired controller from the Sega Megadrive to correct this defect. The emulation is unfortunately not perfect either, you will have to get used to it. To conclude, I think that at a low price (20/30€) this Sega Megadrive Mini HD from the company At Games may be worth it to replace an aging Sega Megadrive on a modern television, however don't spend 89€ for this product...
