She's here! Finally there! The real Sega Mega Drive Mini! So is Sega stronger than you again? Here is my review of the Sega Mega Drive Mini

I can tell you that I was firmly waiting for thisSega Mega Drive Mini! For what? Because Sega is finally taking care of miniature consoles! The low-end consoles (with catastrophic emulation) Mega Drive from At Games are over. I can already tell you that Sega is once again stronger than you!

What a pleasure to find Sega at the controls of these video game consoles! For its big return, it is now possible to treat yourself to the real Sega Mega Drive Mini. As with its competitors Nintendo Classic Mini and Super Nintendo Mini, Sega has put effort into the packaging of its Sega Mega Drive Mini. In fact, the box takes up the marketing codes of the time of the venerable Mega Drive, travel back in time is assured! Once unboxed, you find yourself with a miniaturized Sega Mega Drive which, apart from its small size, looks exactly like the Sega Mega Drive 1!

Aesthetically speaking, this little console is a real success! What a pleasure to look at this superb Sega Mega Drive Mini! This small console offers (for the European version) two Sega Mega Drive 03 button controllers, connected via a USB port. A nice little extra, these controllers are PC compatible 🙂 . The Sega Mega Drive Mini also has a USB power supply that can be plugged directly into the TV but also an HDMI cable for our modern televisions

 

It’s stronger than you!!!!

Yes yes and yes! Sega pulled out all the stops! The interface of this Sega Mega Drive Mini is superb! The covers of the 42 games are superb, but above all the music for the interface is provided by the very respectable Yuzo Koshiro, already author of the memorable music for the Street Of Rage saga! Concerning the catalog of 42 games, Sega obviously offers the hits of the time like Sonic and Street Of Rage II, Shinobi III, Ecco the Dolphin, ToeJam & Earl, Virtua Fighter II but also other rare games like MegaMan The Wily Wars, and Alisia Dragoon.

For “emulation” the very good development studio Sega M2 ensured that each game works correctly, but above all that it works as well as it did at the time of the Mega Drive! On the configuration side it is possible to play in 720P, in 4/3 format (good!!!!!) or 16/9 (not good!!!!! heretic!!!!) but above all we can add the good old cathode filter in order to find the image of yesteryear and that's a lot of fun :) . Pad in hand, this interface is fluid, and in game you can return to the menu easily by holding down "start" for a few seconds or by pressing "reset" from the console like in the days of pimply teenagers ^^.

This is all well and good, but what does it look like in the game? Clearly, I'm not going to beat around the bush, everything works perfectly well! Forget the poor emulation of Mega Drive At Games consoles, here it's Sega quality, and this Sega Mega Drive Mini is very efficient! The games are fluid, the image is resplendent as is the audio, it’s a pure joy for our eyes and ears in 16-bit mode :) You will tell me that I am not objective because I am a Sega fan, of course, but my son is having a blast on this Sega Mega Drive Mini even though he had very bad memories of the At Games consoles (catastrophic emulation, lousy pad). With each game, on this Sega Mega Drive Mini, I plunge back into my childhood and I have a blast! This mini console is close to perfection.

Well, in terms of faults, I quibble a little, but I would have liked one of the two controllers to have 06 buttons! On Street Fighter II, the 03-button controller is clearly a handicap. Don't panic, fortunately a Sega Mega Drive 06 Retrobit button pad can be connected to this console. Concerning the game catalog I would have loved to play Aladdin and the Lion King, but hey there are also questions of rights…

I dreamed of it, Sega did it! Clearly, lately, Sega is doing everything to improve its image, by breathing new life into its cult licenses but above all by offering superior quality games! With its Sega Mega Drive Mini, Sega has applied itself, and this miniature Genesis console is a real success! It’s a small console of very high quality! It has a design faithful to the original console, perfect emulation, and a rich game catalog but above all it offers excellent sensations like when I was a teenager! I love this Sega Mega Drive Mini and I secretly dream that one day Sega will offer a Saturn and Dreamcast Mini :) . To conclude, I dare say it, This Sega Mega Drive Mini is perhaps the best miniature console :)
