Sega Astro City Mini review

In this new article, I offer you my test of the Sega Astro City Mini! So what is this Sega-style mini terminal worth? Here is my opinion!

Santa Claus was very generous this year! He brought me a Sega Astro City Mini directly from Amazon Japan (€129 including shipping)! Today I offer you my test of this mini terminal made by Sega, it’s stronger than you 😀

To properly celebrate Sega's 60th anniversary, the Japanese firm is offering GameGear Micro for sale but also (and above all) the famous Astro City Terminal, in the Sega Astro City Mini version, so that the terminal fits into our living room without taking up too much space :p. Originally the Sega Astro City Mini was not supposed to be sold outside of Japan,but finally it will soon be available on our soil 🙂

The Sega Astro City is the famous Sega terminal released in Japanese arcades in 1993. This terminal has been established in all arcades around the world, thanks in particular to the famous fighting game Virtua Fighter!

A Mini Arcade Terminal faithful to the original!

Aesthetically, Sega has really applied itself to its Sega Astro City Mini. This terminal is of excellent quality. It is a faithful transcription (at 1/6 scale) of the original terminal, it really is a very beautiful object. This Sega Astro City Mini is beautiful but above all robust. The stickers are well placed, the mini terminal lights up and it does not slip thanks to the non-slip pads under the machine.   It seems to me that Sega used materials from the Original Astro City, for the buttons, joystick and resin of the Sega Astro City Mini. For me, this Sega Astro City Mini is the most beautiful mini console.

The Sega Astro City Mini is complete!

The Sega Astro City Mini has two USB ports to connect additional controllers like those of the Sega Megadrive Mini for example or those marketed for the occasion which take on the look of the Astro City. You can also plug in the large arcade stick from the Sega Astro City Mini. It is also equipped with an HDMI Out socket to connect the Astro City Mini to a TV. It offers a sound output for connecting headphones, but also a micro USB socket to power the terminal! The connectivity of the Astro City Mini is complete, nothing is missing. You can even take the vice further by purchasing the accessories “Style Kit» composed of the feet of the terminal and its small stool ^^

The 4-inch screen of the Sega Astro City Mini is excellent. The image is sharp and colorful, the screen is very responsive. It’s a treat for our gamer eyes 😀. I also tested the mini terminal on my 4K TV and frankly it works well. The speakers integrated into the Sega Astro City Mini do the job perfectly.

The handling of the Sega Astro City Mini is great. The joystick is responsive, as are the buttons. The operating system of the mini terminal (in English or Japanese) is easy to use. We find all the classic options, such as backups, wallpapers, scanline etc…

Sega Astro City Mini emulation!

Concerning emulation, the Sega M2 studio is in charge, as when designing the Sega MegaDrive Mini. The challenge was high because the Sega Astro City Mini emulates several Sega Arcade systems, but rest assured, the emulation is of very good quality on this Sega Astro City Mini. The Studio M2 works really well. During a game we add credits by pressing the yellow button instead of the coin mechanism :p and we have fun ^^

The Sega Astro City Mini offers 37 games, here is the complete list: Virtua Fighter, Space Harrier, Rad Mobile, Fantasy Zone, Altered Beast, Golden Axe, Golden Ax – The Revenge Of Death Adder, Alien Syndrome, Alien Storm, Wonder Boy, Wonder Boy In Monster Land, Wonder Boy III Monster Lair, Shinobi, Shadow Dancer, Cyber Police Eswat, Crack Down, Gain Ground, Quartet 2, Puyo Puyo, Puyo Puyo 2, Columns, Columns II, Stack Columns, Bonanza Bros, Tant-R, Ichidant-R, Thunder Force AC, Sonic Boom, Dottori Kun, Flicky, Sega Ninja, My Hero, Arabian Fight, Dark Edge, Cotton, Alex Kidd with Stella The Lost Stars, Scramble Spirits. The games offered are varied and frankly good but we can regret the absence of certain games including Daytona USA or Outrun for example.

Here is my verdict!

This Sega Astro City Mini is a masterpiece! For me, it is much superior to the Neo Geo Mini in every way. Beautiful, robust, complete, this Sega Astro City Mini offers very good emulation, thanks to the talent of the M2 studio. It is a very nice collector's item, but also a superb mini terminal, very nice to take out during evenings with friends 🙂 Bravo Sega! When will you be back with a real new video game console? 😀 I have the right to dream, right? ^^
