Playstation 3 review

 

In this article I discuss the test of the Playstation 3, the 3rd home console from Playstation!

The Playstation 3 had the difficult mission of succeeding the famous Playstation 2 which literally beat the competition! It was the best-selling video game console in the world. In addition, Xbox took Playstation by surprise by launching its Xbox 360 1 year before this Playstation 3!

The challenge was therefore met and unfortunately for Sony this Playstation 3 began its career with difficulty. Wanting to do too much by offering a Blu-ray player in the console and full backward compatibility of PS2 games in its premium version, the Playstation 3 had a launch price of €600!

This price was unheard of at the time!

At the time I obviously didn't have the means to pay €600 like most players. This exorbitant price penalized the Playstation 3 at the start of its career compared to an Xbox 360 priced between €300 for the core system and €400 for the premium version which was often on sale at €349! The choice of players naturally went towards the less expensive Xbox 36, especially since it offered the same third-party games as this PS3.

Fortunately, over time, Sony launched new Playstation 3 models (the PS3 Slim and Ultra Slim in particular) in order to offer the same prices as the Xbox 360. It was therefore during this period that I bought my Playstation 3 Slim with an exclusive first party game, namely the superb Heavy Rain! I often fall for a new video game console when it offers an exceptional game! So I finally had my Playstation 3, right next to my Xbox 360!

My PS3 Slim was black, it had a 120GB disk, and unlike an Xbox 360, it had a (very good) blu-ray player to play games but also and especially films (that was cool and even 3D films!). Casually, a home blu-ray player was expensive at the time, so frankly you might as well buy a Playstation 3, in addition to playing movies it also acts as a video game console :p. In terms of technical power, on paper, the PS3 was a little more powerful than the Xbox 360. Unfortunately it was more complicated for video game developers to master, and therefore third-party games sometimes looked better on the Xbox 360. At least the games were in High Definition and sometimes even at 60 fps! The Playstation 3 also had the advantage of having better reliability than the Xbox 360 with its red ring of death :-/

Regarding the controller, my PS3 Slim had the vibrating dualshock 3! It also had “SixAxis” (motion detection) technology. It also had a built-in battery and that was really cool, we no longer needed to change batteries.

In the meantime, the Nintendo Switch has turned the video game landscape upside down by democratizing motion gaming but above all by crushing the competition. Xbox and Playstation had to react in order to also offer motion gaming. At Playstation the Ps Move has therefore arrived to offer motion Gaming similar to the Wii Mote from Nintendo.

Let's now talk about the interface ofthe Playstation 3. It looked very similar to that of the Playstation Portable, the PSP. The interface was clear, sober but above all intuitive!

Sony, seeing the growing success of Xbox Live, has also launched its Playstation Network for its Playstation 3! Having been able to compare the two services at the time, clearly Xbox Live was much more solid and efficient. It was certainly paid for at Xbox, but the quality of the online game was there. The same could not be said of the Playstation Network, which has fortunately improved a lot over the years! But hey, this Playstation Network has come a long way.

What is certain is that I loved my Playstation 3, it had incredible exclusive single-player games!

The PS3 game library

As usual with Playstation, it’s plentiful! The games library on this Playstation 3 is amazing! I loved Heavy Rain, I really enjoyed The Last Of Us Chapter 1. We could also count on other incredible games like those from the Uncharted Saga, God Of War, Little Big Planet, Ratchet and Clank, Wipeout, Gran Turismo, KillZone, Motorstorm… Obviously on the third party games side (also available on Xbox 360) it was a festival of video game hits! How can we forget GTA IV and V, Red Dead Redemption, Tomb Raider, Batman Arkham, Call Of Duty, Fifa, Far Cry, Assassin’s Creed, Rockband, Street Fighter IV, Soul Calibur… Frankly, there are several hundred hits on this Playstation 3. Really, the PS3 and Xbox 360 games were clearly the golden age of video games!

The PS3 today

The Playstation 3 connects seamlessly to our modern Full HD and 4K televisions. In fact you can connect it via HDMI, and PS3 games offer games with a graphics resolution between 720 and 1080 p for some! Concerning online gaming, it is likely that the Playstation Network no longer works (or almost no longer) on PS3. Obviously today everyone plays on PS4 and PS5! However, you will still be able to enjoy your PS3 single player games! It has so many good games that you will have plenty to keep you busy until your old age!
