Here is my review of the Playstation 2, the most famous and best-selling home console in the world!

Playstation 2, the 3rd world!

The Playstation 2, better known as PS2, made history with its historic launch in the year 2000 all over the world. This new Playstation was eagerly awaited, it was not surprising given the insolent and deserved success of the first Playstation of the name.

Like the Playstation 1 which offered the playback of Audio CDs in addition to video games, the Playstation 2 offered native playback of DVD films! Casually at the time it was worth it, given the exorbitant price of a classic DVD player. With the PS2 you had a powerful 128-bit game console but also a very good DVD movie player! Clearly this cinematic multimedia functionality was a big selling point compared to the Sega Dreamcast which only had a GD Rom reader (larger capacity CD rom)

Another big advantage of this DVD player at the time, the games could be larger thanks to the large storage capacity of a blank DVD compared to a CD Rom!

The last big marketing argument that hit the mark at the time, the Playstation 2 was capable of playing Playstation 1 games, it was backward compatible with video games from the previous Play generation!

The Playstation 2 had an elegant and innovative design for the time. It was a sort of black monolyth, and the console could stand vertically. The storage capacity of PS2 memory cards was much greater than on PS1 and the console was sold with a black DualShock 2. For the time, this PS2 was rather silent and the console interface was simple and efficient.

In terms of technical power, you are starting to know Sony. They announced that the new Emotion Engine processor for the PS2 was revolutionary and that it would knock out the competition on consoles but also on PC. In short, marketing bullshit with the method we sell dreams even if we talk nonsense. Each console manufacturer uses and abuses this technique (hello Xbox Series X). IN truth, yes, the Playstation 2 games were very beautiful, but some Sega Dreamcast games were just as good, or even better at the time! Compare to see Dead Or Alive 2 or Soul Calibur, it works better on the Dreamcast. Play Shenmue on the Sega Dreamcast, you will not find an equivalent on PS2 in terms of graphics, based on the same category of games (Open world, F.R.E.E…)

Thanks to Sony's marketing, and the excellent commercial strategy (the DVD player, exclusives on certain games including EA games, GTA, Gran Turismo, MGS…), more than 155 million PS2s have joined the homes of gamers around the world. IF I'm not talking nonsense, the Playstation 2 still holds the record for video game console sales! The career of the PS2 was long and its catalog of video games is simply mind-blowing! I loved Metal gear Solid 2, Grand Turismo 3, I had a blast on GTA III, Vice City and SAn Andreas, Jak And Daxter, Ratchet and Clank, Okami, Silent Hill 2, the list goes on 🙂

Towards the end of its career the PS2 was available in a Slim version at a low price, and it was also possible to play certain video games online in order to compete with the Xbox and its Xbox Live. But hey, the online experience on PS2 was anecdotal and clearly not up to par with Xbox Live.

What to remember about this PS2?

The Playstation 2 is an exceptional console on every level! Retro compatible with PS1, capable of playing DVD films and boasting a gargantuan game catalog of excellent quality, it is a monument of video games! It is the globally successful video game console that caused the fall and end of the Sega Dreamcast adventure, but it is also and above all the best-selling video game console in the world. This is hardly surprising given the unforgettable games like the GTA III saga (GTA III, Vice City and San Andreas), Gran Turismo, Metal Gear Solid 2, Silent Hill 2, God Of War to name a few...
