Penment Test!

Here is my first test of 2023! I offer you the Pentiment test on Xbox Series S and X!

First of all, I would like to wish you a very happy new year 2023! I wish you lots of happiness and lots of good things, but above all great health! Let's return to our sheep, or rather to our monks. For this new year, I offer you my test of Pentiment, you know the game that was mocked during its presentation by our crusty video game specialists (they will recognize themselves).

Pentimenttakes place in the Middle Ages. We play Andreas Maler, master craftsman, who refines his illumination technique at Kiersau Abbey. Obviously this game is not easy, and like the very beautiful film by Jean-Jacques Annaud, “The Name of the Rose” we will have to investigate following various dramas. Clearly Pentiment is strongly inspired by this timeless cinematic masterpiece.

Beneath its (false) appearance of a small, unpretentious independent video game, there is in fact a large, deep, two-dimensional narrative game, produced byObsidian. Its original 2D graphics representing illuminations may be surprising at first, but you quickly get used to them. Pentiment is a point and click role-playing game set in the village of Tassing. Pad in hand, our character moves easily and we enjoy walking around as well as investigating and chatting with the villagers. This game is fully translated into French (phew! given the numerous dialogues) it takes place in 3 parts and for each of them you have to investigate a murder/drama, with a limited time. At the end of each game we have to name a culprit but Pentiment never reveals the real murderer, because like in a cluedo game there are many suspects in the village of Tassing.  Needless to say, Pentiment has impressive replayability because depending on our decisions and accusations, the game appears very different. In addition, Pentiment is a game very rich in cultural information, particularly on the Christian religion and the Middle Ages.

I noticed a few small flaws in Pentiment but nothing major. On rare occasions (fortunately) some dialogue is incoherent and does not correspond to our discussions. The sound effects are also basic (in ASMR mode) unlike the music which is very beautiful. I also found that the third part of the game is a little less interesting than the first two.

My verdict

Finally an original bug game! Thank you Obsidian for this little video game masterpiece! Pentiment clearly made me want to know more about the Middle Ages. They should offer this same style of video games in addition to history books in middle school, it would captivate the students much more! In any case, I strongly invite you to play Pentiment. Don't hesitate, it's available on Xbox Game Pass!
