Nvidia Shield review! Nvidia is taking over the living room?

For my birthday, I decided to treat myself, so I bought myself the little Android console from Nvidia! So without further delay, here is the test of the Nvidia Shield!

To be honest, I had wanted to acquire this Nvidia Shield for several months. On paper it promised great features! Indeed, with its Media Center, Cloud Gaming, PC game streaming, Android TV and Miracast functions, it looks like a very good Swiss army knife!

The best Android TV?

Being one of the only real Android TV Boxes, with the Nexus Player and the Xiaomi Mi Box, this Nvidia Shield therefore includes the very latest version of Android TV, 7.0, with the entire Google Play Store catalog! Thanks to its configuration equivalent to a Nintendo Switch, notably with the very good Nvidia Tegra X1 graphics chip, the Shield's Android interface is completely fluid! With its small ergonomic remote control, navigating this intuitive interface is a real joy! It’s a treat! I tested different Android applications like Molotov TV, Kodi, DS Player, OCS, Youtube, everything works perfectly! The Shield is perfect in its Media Center function, it is the best in its field in my opinion, even being capable of displaying 4K in HDR! It completely replaced my Bbox Miami (back in its original box) which kept crashing with TV channels and Android applications.

The Best in PC game streaming?

The Nvidia Shield also promises to be capable of streaming PC games to the TV! I tested this feature and it actually works without a hitch. Firstly, you must have a PC equipped with an Nvidia graphics card. It must obviously be turned on. For local streaming to be perfect, I recommend connecting the PC and the Nvidia Shield via RJ45 to the ISP modem. My Nvidia Shield detected all of my games on my PC and was able to stream them perfectly! It works very well, even better than Steam Link! The only small drawback of this PC game streaming is that it is not possible for a third party to use the computer during the gaming session! But I quibble, because playing PC games on the living room TV with the Nvidia Shield Controller which is as ergonomic as the very good Xbox pad, it's a joy!

Cloud gaming the future of video games?

Nvidia, with its Shield, offers its cloud service, Geforce Now for €9.99 per month! What is it about? This is a monthly subscription offering a large number of video games for rental, running on powerful remote servers which have the best graphics cards and processors of the moment. We can consider this service as a Netflix of video games! The first month was free, so I tried this service! Not currently having optical fiber at my home, I feared the worst even if my connection is not too bad (12 mega and 1 mega). Nvidia announces that geforce Now works correctly even with an ADSL connection like mine. I tested different games and to tell you the truth it's not exceptional. We're going to say that it's graphically between an Xbox 360 and an Xbox One because of my speed. Due to my ADSL connection, games tend to lag, which spoils the gaming session. There is no doubt, however, that with optical fiber the games should be superb, certainly rivaling the biggest PCs of the moment in 4K! Geforce Now is therefore reserved primarily for lucky gamers with optical fiber!

And Android games in all this?

No need to beat around the bush, this Nvidia Shield does not fear any Android game, they are all perfectly fluid and optimized thanks to the good configuration of this home console. Being able to play these games on the living room TV is really nice, and as mentioned previously the Nvidia Shield pad is excellent! Additionally, thanks to the Google Play Store, you can enrich the Shield with numerous video game console emulators, but shhh, I didn't say anything ^^. This Shield is also very good at emulation, it is the perfect companion for the retro gamer 😀

Winner by KO this Nvidia Shield?

I'm tempted to say yes! This little, completely silent Nvidia Shield is an excellent product! It is perfect in its functions as Android TV, Media Center, Android games, retro gaming as well as PC game streaming! We can take screenshots, stream gaming sessions, it’s great! Its fluid and intuitive interface never fails! The only complaints about the Nvidia Shield, in my opinion, are its high price (€229), its low storage capacity of 16 gigabytes for the base model and its requirement to have optical fiber to enjoy an exceptional cloud gaming experience with the Geforce Now! Aside from these few flaws, this Nvidia Shield has perfectly replaced my Bbox Miami and my media center! I'm having a blast with the Shield 😀 Thanks Nvidia!
