Nintendo Switch Oled review

In this article I offer you my tongue-in-cheek test of the Nintendo Switch Oled! Is the WOW effect present?

To tell you the truth, I didn't think I would fall for the new Nintendo Switch Oled. Clearly, apart from the new screen, the other slight developments of this new Nintendo Switch did not justify, for me, returning to the checkout. Finally, it was thanks to the improved trade-in offer from the video game brand Micromania that I exchanged my venerable Switch (with a few games) for a brand new Nintendo Switch Oled. This recovery operation ultimately cost me almost nothing (€50). So what's new on this new Nintendo Switch?

Finally OLED!

Yes it was about time! Frankly, I never understood why the Nintendo Switch of 2017 was not equipped with an Oled screen like the Playstation Vita at the time! On the Nintendo Switch released in March 2017, you had to make do with a standard 6.2-inch LCD screen. Today with this Nintendo Switch Oled, the visual gain is simply breathtaking! Going from the 6.2-inch LCD to this superb 7-inch Oled screen is like day and night. The screen of this Nintendo Switch Oled is resplendent! It’s clearly a visual fireworks display! I rediscover my games in a different light! The colors are bright and perfect, the black is really black, frankly it's a treat for my eyes. Then the 7-inch screen is still comfortable to play in portable mode! I compared this new Nintendo Switch with my partner's classic Switch, this new model is really a great development thanks to this superb Oled screen.

What's new!

Fortunately, this new Nintendo Switch Oled does not only offer a beautiful, brand new screen (clearly) superior to the Nintendo Switch Classic. The Switch Oled now goes to 64 GB of internal storage instead of 32! Well it's better but it's still ridiculous in 2021 especially given the weight of video games at the moment... I strongly recommend that you add a micro SD in order to have much more available storage...

The other (very) pleasant novelty is this new support for the Nintendo Switch Oled. Say goodbye to the ridiculous cheap plastic tripod of the Nintendo Switch Classic. Frankly, it was unstable and fragile. I was always afraid of dropping my portable console. The Switch Oled now has the same holding system as that of the Microsoft Surface, with a tripod running the entire length of the console. It’s sturdy and reclines perfectly.

I also noted that Nintendo has revised the sound of this new Nintendo Switch Oled. There's something better, it's a pleasure for our old ears!

The last new thing I noticed is on the new Nintendo Switch Oled dock! IT finally has an Ethernet port! It was about time! There's nothing better than playing online with a fast wired connection! Wifi clearly shows its limits during competitive video game sessions.

The same flaws!

And yes, unfortunately, this new Nintendo Switch Oled is far from perfect! Nintendo, in 2021, has still not increased the raw power of its Switch. The Nintendo Switch Oled is still equipped with the same aging Nvidia Tegra graphics chip. As a reminder, this graphics technology dates from 2015… Already in 2017 this graphics chip was hard to see on the Nintendo Switch Classic, but then finding it on the Switch Oled of 2021 is borderline crazy. What can we also say about the same 04 gigabytes of RAM? Well it’s weak, even weaker than in 2017… For information, the next Steam Deck portable console, which will arrive in a few months, will have 16 gigabytes of RAM and an AMD graphics chip with the latest 2021 news. Clearly, the Nintendo Switch Oled is abysmal technologically behind the PS5 and Xbox Series games… Don't buy a Switch to play games from third-party publishers…

Regarding the joy-con, Nintendo supposedly solved the joy-con drift problem. Personally I don't believe it, we'll see, maybe I'm wrong.

Here is my verdict!

This Nintendo Switch Oled is a great development. The Oled screen is a huge plus, it is superb, the quality is there. We are rediscovering our video games in portable mode. The colors are perfect, the screen is larger, it’s a delight. This Nintendo Switch Oled is a must have for the nomadic gamer! Truly it’s day and night. This model is of much better quality (Oled screen, tripod, storage, sound).

On the other hand, the Nintendo Switch Oled is frankly useless if you play in living room mode. It brings nothing more and no graphic development. In short, move on if you play on your big TV! It still does not support 4K display in 2021, which is a shame!

To put it simply. Are you a nomadic gamer? The Nintendo Switch Oled is a must have. Do you play on your big TV in the living room? No need to buy this new model, the classic Switch will more than do the job.
