Neo Geo Pocket Color review!
So welcome to the new member of my big family of video game consoles, the Neo Geo Pocket Color! Here is my little test!
It’s been quite a while since I bought a “new” game console! So I treated myself to a small Neo Geo Pocket Color to complete my collection! For the record, SNK, a Japanese company, queen of the arcade, wanted to take on Nintendo with its unbeatable Gameboy! Unfortunately for SNK, the Neo Geo Poket, then the Neo Geo Pocket Color did not achieve the success they hoped for, and the career of this portable console was brief (1998/2001)! Despite everything, I got myself a Neo Geo Pocket Color with King Of Fighter R2!
After placing my hands on the portable console I felt a very good feeling of solidity! It must be said that the console is well over 15 years old and despite its age it shows no trace of wear or malfunction, good job SNK! I find it very pleasant to hold, it is not heavy and the joystick and buttons are correctly placed. After starting the console you arrive at the pocket menu of the Neo Geo Pocket Color where it is possible to make basic settings such as the time or the language of the console. After inserting the cartridge into the console, my game King Of Fighter R2 launched very quickly! No loading or patch installation time, what a joy! It’s a change from PS4, Xbox One or Wii U! First big slap in my face, I have never felt such comfort in terms of handling as on this Neo Geo Pocket Color! The joystick is just perfect! (I love the little click). It's like playing on an arcade machine, it's fast, precise, solid and above all addictive! Nothing to do with the directional crosses or joysticks of competing portable consoles! The only downside is that the color screen is not backlit! It feels strange in 2016 to play on this type of screen! But hey, it doesn’t matter, light isn’t what’s missing around our environment!
Technically speaking, the Neo Geo Pocket Color is a 16-bit portable console, for its category it does quite well! So test fighting games on this console, it's heavy, it really feels like you're holding an arcade machine in your pocket! The sound part of the machine is not left out, it reminds me of the good old days! And what about the autonomy, 40 hours for 2 batteries is enormous and it’s a record! Another stack is also available for game saves! Little anecdote, in addition to being able to connect Neo Geo Pocket Colors together to play with others, it is also possible to connect this portable console with the Dreamcast, another cult and essential console! We can say that SNK has designed this Neo Geo Pocket Color well, as this machine exudes quality and a job well done! I understand that the Neo Geo Pocket Color has a more than nice catalog, inherited from the invaluable home console, the Neo Geo, the purchase price of which is exorbitant today. Count on me to soon test the fatal fury, metal slug, king of fighter, but also the Sonic Pocket Adventure! What do you want, I'm a Sega Fan! You have understood that if you are looking for a pocket arcade machine, this Neo Geo Pocket Color must be part of your life! This portable console is really nice! Try it, you might adopt it!
