My review of the Playstation Classic – Beautiful but disappointing
It’s the turn of the Playstation 1 to have the right to a miniaturized anniversary version of the very first Sony console. So here is my review of the Playstation Classic, clearly it’s a disappointment!
Faced with the insolent success of Nintendo with its Nintendo Classic Mini, and its Super Nintendo Classic Mini, Sony responded by offering its vision, of its first Playstation, by marketing one called Playstation Classic. For €100 Sony offers a mini Playstation with 20 integrated games, 2 controllers, an HDMI port for the TV and a mini USB socket for power. Is this Playstation Classic worth its price?
Small but beautiful!
For once, this Playstation Classic is worth the detour! In addition to being miniaturized, it does not forget to be very beautiful. It is frankly very faithful to the anthological look of the venerable Sony Playstation 1 which is celebrating its 24th anniversary this year. Twenty four years already! But how can we forget its grayish futuristic look for the time, this Playstation stood out from the competition with its audacity and its innovations. In short, this Playstation Classic incorporates all the visual codes of the original console. Sony has also decided to offer for this Playstation Classic, the original controller from 1994. I can understand this choice in order to respect the history, but it is not necessarily coherent. We're not going to lie, the Playstation's Dual Shock was still much better...
Beautiful but perfectible!
I'm not going to beat around the bush, this Playstation Classic can really be improved on several levels. We'll start with the most obvious. What is this hazardous emulation? Depending on the games, we either play in the US 60hz (30 frames per second) or PAL 50hz (25 frames per second) version. SONY couldn't put all the games in the American version in order to have optimal speed in play? Nintendo made this consistent choice for its Super Nes Mini and it wasn't any worse! Try playing Tekken 3 on Playstation Classic in PAL… It’s slow but it’s slow! Alas, I'm not done with the hazardous emulation of this PS Classic… What is delirium? Depending on the game the resolution can be 720P or 480P! Was 1090P too much to ask for? we're not going to lie, the image is disgusting on a Full HD TV! With a 4K television I think we might go vomit! Also an unforgivable fault, there is no optional cathode filter to improve the image of games on this Playstation Classic. Clearly the emulator does the bare minimum here! The icing on the cake was that Sony didn't bother, they opted for an open source emulator! Anyway, why work when the community offers royalty-free software… Sony didn't even take the time to refine its emulator, it's a shame for the 100€ requested!
An incomplete catalog!
So yes there are the very good video games Final Fantasy 7, Meteal Gear Solid, Ridge Racer Type 4, Grand Theft Auto, Rayman, Oddworld Abe's Odyssey, Resident Evil, Tekken 3 on the Playstation Classic, but for the rest frankly... Where did Wipeout go? Gran Turismo? Driver? Silent Hill? Crash Bandicoot? Tomb Raider? Don't look for these games, they aren't there on the PS Classic! It’s just incredible! Ask anyone to name the cult games from the Playstation 1, they'll all come out with Crash Bandicoot Wipeout Gran Turismo and Tomb RAider… It's as if on a Sega console we forgot Sonic, it's just unforgivable!
Good feelings fortunately!
Yes still happy! The Madeleine De Proust effect is immediate when playing the Playstation Classic Mini. We feel the superb gaming sensations of the time. It should be noted the excellent idea of “resume points” in addition to classic saves, it is ideal for picking up your game where you left off. The eject button on the Playstation Classic is also used to virtually change discs, particularly for certain games which required several CDs at the time.
What a disappointment!
Yes, it’s a disappointment. The emulation of the Playstation Classic can be improved (480P/720p, Pal 50hz, NTSC 60hz, no cathode filter), regarding the game catalog, it is just off the mark! No Driver, no Crash Bandicoot, no Tomb Raider, no Wipeout from Gran Turismo, it's just amazing! Why hasn't Sony refined its Playstation Classic by optimizing emulation and offering a game catalog consistent with the reputation of the Playstation 1? There is no doubt that the lure of profit and the Christmas period influenced SONY… The only element that saves this Playstation Classic is clearly its magnificent look from the period, faithfully reproduced! This Playstation Classic is therefore reserved for collectors but certainly not for demanding gamers! AND honestly, it's not worth €100… What a waste this Playstation Classic…
