I had the Neo Geo Mini Japanese version for several weeks, but due to lack of time I was not able to write my article for you! So here is my review of the Neo Geo Mini!

SNK, the brand behind the famous Neo Geo home console, made any self-respecting gamer drool. Indeed, with a catalog of explosive arcade games including King Of Fighter, Metal Slug and company, this home console was overpowering for the time! Alas, the Neo Geo of yesteryear was inaccessible to ordinary gamers! The console cost an arm and a leg and some cartridges easily exceeded 1000 francs at the time, it was incredible. The only solution left for us gamers was to drool behind the window of a video game store running this magnificent home console!   Like Nintendo, SNK has also decided to release a mini version of its cult console, the Neo Geo. But not in any form! This Neo geo Mini is a tiny arcade machine that can fit on the palm of one hand! As disconcerting as it may seem, this Neo Geo Mini has many advantages! I offer you my test of the Neo Geo Mini Japanese version! THANKSNin Nin Games!

Small but strong!

And yes, like all SNK consoles, this Neo Geo Mini is robust! Even though its covering is plastic, the whole thing is sturdy enough for long arcade video game sessions! I had my doubts about the quality of the integrated 3.5-inch screen but ultimately it came out more than well! The image is lively and vibrant, we find the sprites of the time, it’s really good! Despite its small size, it's perfectly playable! The integrated joystick is solid! The buttons are also well placed, the handling on this little arcade machine really does the job!  The console's built-in speaker has enough power to feel like you're in an arcade, without the tokens of course :) . The Neo Mini is powered by a USB C cable that can easily be connected to any energy source! It’s really cool, because this Neo Geo Mini is a very easily transportable console! For multiplayer sessions it is possible to connect 02 Neo Geo CD type pads (pad sold separately for €30 each). I tested it in nomadic mode with an additional controller, it’s fun and convincing! Obviously, the most delicate part for these consoles in Mini version is obviously the quality of the emulation. If I have to give an example it is the very poor emulation of Sega Megadrive games from At Games “consoles”. Fortunately, SNK has fine-tuned the Neo Geo emulation in its small transportable mini console! The emulation is clean, I haven't noticed any slowdowns or bugs so far, it's perfectly playable! The Neo geo Mini console interface is simple and straight to the point. You select your game, you can adjust different parameters (video, backup, language) it couldn't be simpler.

How is it on TV?

The Neo Geo Mini has a mini HDMI port, so I rushed to buy a suitable cable to connect my small console to my TV in the living room. Once connected, the resolution offered is 720P 60. I tested different games like the legendary Metal Slug on my TV and honestly the rendering was not great, the image was blurry. So I went through the settings and saw that there was an image optimization mode! Clearly this mode has worked wonders on my small Full HD TV. The image was much more convincing (much sharper), even if obviously we will never achieve the image of yesteryear on our parents' good big cathode TVs! In living room mode you can also switch your game to 16/9 or leave it in 4/3, it's up to you, I tested the 02 and it does the job! The Neo Geo Mini has 40 games, so I definitely have a lot of fun! I am very happy about it because at the time it was impossible for me to play this console given the price of consoles and games. Today I can finally catch up and discover the very arcade catalog of Neo Geo games on this little Neo Geo Mini!

It’s still expensive!

Yes it’s expensive! But for my part, I didn’t do too badly! I imported my Neo Geo Mini from Japan with an additional Pad for €110 including shipping. In France it costs 130€ for the console alone, and you have to add 30€ per controller (euros tubing as usual…). In the end we easily arrive at €200 to properly rediscover the very good catalog of Neo Geo consoles on our modern televisions. We must be frank, it remains expensive for ordinary gamers! Speaking relatively, at the time some Neo Geo games cost more than 1000 francs, and consoles were even worse. To conclude, certainly the entry fee for this Neo Geo Mini can be off-putting, but it is the price to pay to obtain a Mini version of the legendary Neo Geo, with very correct emulation, but above all with the possibility of being able to take it and play it anywhere!
