My review of Sonic the Movie

In this article I offer you my little favorite of the month! Here is my review of SOnic The Film!

How time flies! I remember when I was 6-7 years old, my amazement at my very first video game! And it wasn’t just any game! It was Sonic The Hedgehog on my Sega Master System II. I spent hundreds of hours on this Sonic when I was a kid and almost 30 years later, the magic still works on me! In his platform games, this blue hedgehog still goes so fast and he is more determined than ever to destroy the robots made by the evil Dr. Eggman 😀.

When I heard about a film adaptation of the Sonic video game, I rushed to watch the first tape and like many fans I almost had a stroke when I saw the completely failed look of my favorite blue hedgehog. With his completely disproportionate size and body, but especially with his frightening face, I thought it was a bad joke. AND well no!

Faced with the discontent of Sonic fans, Studio Paramount Pictures has revised its copy to offer a much more coherent look to our Super Star Sonic the Hedgehog! It’s better, isn’t it?

February vacation obliges, and given the first film reviews less catastrophic than expected, I said to myself why not bring my partner and my two sons aged 3 and 6 to the cinema to see Sonic The Movie. Not to lie to you, I prepared myself psychologically to watch an international film and ultimately I had a good time! Here's why!

I had a major fear before going to see Sonic the Movie. I thought it would be complicated to integrate a fictional video game character into a real film. I've always seen Sonic in video games and cartoons but never in a movie. But ultimately the special effects of the film dispelled my fears and thanks to a good direction and a nice soundtrack I found it cool! It's a bit like the movie Ted but super fast Sonic version! We're still talking about Sonic the Hedgehog!!!

From the first minutes of the film, my childhood memories came to the surface and seeing my children laughing like crazy I told myself that I too was going to have fun watching this film. I was worried that this film would be too long (1 hour 40 minutes), but in the end my sons didn't see the time passing, and so did I :) That's generally a good sign.

Even if the history ofSonic the Movieis really very classic, I find that it respectfully addresses the theme of solitude and friendship. This film reveals a little-known side of our Sonic who is forced to hide from the outside world to prevent ill-intentioned people from discovering his secrets but especially his powers. In his journey Sonic will have to team up with the Green Hills Police Chief nicknamed the Lord of the Donuts (the police will appreciate ^^). As in any good self-respecting Sonic scenario, they will have to face the terrible Dr. Robotnik (also called Eggman for close friends :p).

Who better (or worse ^^) than Jim Carrey to play the role of Doctor Robotnik! In the Sonic movie we see that Jim is totally freewheeling (as usual :p). He improvises his dialogues and his facial expressions from start to finish, and even if he repeats a few lines from The Mask, he gives his all to his role as Eggman! I loved it, then I've been a fan of Jim Carrey since I was little so I'm not necessarily objective 🙂 .

I'm not going to lie to you either, it's not the best film in the world. But we are very, very far from the catastrophe predicted by all the “specialists”. Sonic the Movie is for me an enjoyable and funny film. It’s a film for the general public that can be seen by young and old alike. Obviously, and I can understand it, this film may also displease certain Sonic aficionados, everyone has their own tastes as they say and it's impossible to please everyone anyway.

Afterwards, I'm not ashamed to say it, I admit, I had a good time watching Sonic the Movie! The icing on the cake for me was notably the end credits in 16-bit Sonic mode which takes up the entire film in the video game version! And what about the post credits scene!!!! Rhaaaa I hope there will be a sequel to the Sonic film. Afterwards my little finger tells me that it’s on the right track given the huge success it’s had at the cinema :) Like what; even 30 years later, Sega is still stronger than you!
