My opinion on the Xbox One S All Digital
The latest addition to the Xbox One family, Microsoft has been offering an Xbox without any physical drive for several months. Here is my opinion on the Xbox One S All Digital
A video game console without any optical drive??? What a funny idea! However we will have to face the facts, game consoles with disc (CD DVD Blu-ray) and cartridge drives are on the verge of disappearing... The next generation PS5 and Xbox Series will have optical drives but they will probably be the last. We must not be fooled between the deployment of optical fiber in France and the need to make huge "day one" updates when we have a game in physical format, it then becomes preferable to take our game in "dematerialized".
Let's also not forget the progressive success of subscriptions like Xbox Game Pass and Playstation Now, players are starting to change their gaming habits, clearly I am one of those. Butthe Xbox One S All Digitalis not the first console to try everything dematerialized! Yes!, another console before it attempted this adventure. You don't remember that??? This is the Sony PSP Go. We're not going to lie to each other for this full demat portable console it was really too early… Immediately launched, immediately forgotten. Will the Xbox One S all Digital suffer the same fate? Not necessarily!
Goodbye 4K Blu-ray player!
And yes, as its name suggests, the Xbox One S “All Digital” does not have any 4K Blu-ray player! So don't even try to insert an Xbox One game disc, or a movie, it's simply mission impossible 😀. There is therefore no point in buying new games in stores or picking up second-hand games in specialized stores. You must therefore go through the Microsoft store to buy your games in digital format! The advantage is at least we can get rid of our game shelves in our bedrooms and living room! Casually we recover space and m2 🙂 . Small advantage also, the fact that this console no longer has a player, it is therefore much quieter, because you no longer hear the disc spinning.
For those who have fallen for this Xbox One S "All Digital" I strongly recommend that you wait for the numerous sales periods to get excellent deals on the Xbox store so as not to pay 59, or even 69€ for your games :/ . With this “All Digital” Xbox One S, Xbox Game Pass therefore becomes essential because this subscription offers hundreds of Xbox games each month, in addition to the new “day one” Xbox Game Studio games (Halo Infinite, Gears 5, Flight SImulator, Forza Horizon 4, Sea Of Thieves).

This video game console exclusively offers games in digital format, so you will need a solid internet connection, such as fiber optic or cable. Clearly I do not recommend taking this Xbox One S All Digital if you only have an ADSL connection. You risk waiting many, many hours before being able to play your new video game. And yes today games weigh on average 30 to 40 GB while some even exceed 100 GB. This may sound crazy but it's not going to get better with time. On the contrary, the next video games will be bigger and bigger in size.
Fortunately, the Xbox One S All Digital has a 1TB hard drive allowing you to store at least 10 to 20 games. In addition, as I already do for my Xbox One Scorpio, it is possible to add an external USB3 hard drive to add space to your console. Small detail little known to gamers, installing your games on an external USB 3 hard drive helps reduce “in game” loading times. It’s cool, isn’t it?
Finally, this Xbox One S All Digital attempts to accustom console players to live only with dematerialized games, as the PC has been offering for many years now via Steam, Uplay, Epic Game Store…
My opinion on the Xbox One S All Digital
Ultimately the only question that needs to be asked is the following. At what price am I willing to sacrifice games in physical format? We're not going to lie, when it launched the Xbox One S All Digital was not at all interesting. Priced at €249, you had to be crazy to invest in this console when the classic Xbox One S was sometimes less expensive in a bundle with games. Black Friday saw the price of the Xbox One S All digital drop precipitously. It ended up at €120 and it was immediately more competitive. Clearly I think I would have fallen for this Xbox one S All digital if the price had fallen to €100 or less.
Clearly my opinion on the Xbox One S All Digital is as follows. This console will not appeal to players who want to have boxed games, it is not compatible anyway. On the other hand, this Xbox One S All Digital may appeal to players who no longer swear by the dematerialized format (yes, there are players like that…). It targets a particular gaming audience which will grow year after year. As we know, video games on disk and cartridge have probably lived on in recent years. It started with music, then films and now with Xbox Game Pass and Playstation Now subscriptions, digital video games will gain more and more momentum in the hearts of players.
My last question is this. When are you going to break down and only take games in digital format 🙂???
