Lego 2K Drive review

Today I offer you my Lego 2k Drive test, enjoy reading!

Having 2 children aged 6 and 9, you can imagine that I had an obligation to buy this Lego 2K Drive :) They loved the Lego expansion of Forza Horizon 4, so I had no chance of missing out on this official Lego racing game, offered by the 2K Games studio. As all 3 of us are used to the Xbox pad, I bought the Xbox Series X version of Lego 2K Drive. Please note that the game is multiplatform, it is also available on PS4/PS5, Nintendo Switch and PC!

Multiplatform requires, Lego 2K Drive is not as visually beautiful as the Lego extension of Forza Horizon 4. But heyLego 2K Drivewith its location of Bricklandia still represents the Lego universe well, it's colorful, fluid and fun! The environments are varied, we go from the city (Turbo Acres), in the countryside (Big Butte County), with rocks inspired by Nevada (Prospect Valley)and finally to a horrific zone (Hauntsborough).Unfortunately, to move from one region to another, fast travel is mandatory; Lego 2K Drive does not really offer an Open World but rather several distinct play areas.

The gameplay is immediate, pad in hand. Driving the different vehicles does not represent a big difficulty. As in Mario Kart, skidding is important because it generates a boost bar. We can also jump with our car which is very fun given the play area offered. Our vehicle transforms depending on the terrain. We automatically move smoothly from the quad, to the car but also to the boat. Obviously to win the races you have to use all the numerous gameplay possibilities. In addition, jumping, boosting, drifting, shortcuts, and bonuses (like Mario kart boxes). Your driving and your reflexes will allow victory (or not). Lego 2k Drive focuses everything on driving, to the detriment of racing and speed. Having children, Lego 2K Drive is not perfect in terms of gameplay. There is no assisted driving for little ones like in Mario Kart or FORza Horizon and I noticed the absence of GPS, even I sometimes struggled to find the right path.

The ultimate goal of Lego 2k Drive is obviously to win the Celeste Cup. Obviously there is a long way to go before winning the grail. In single-player mode, victory is mandatory in order to win your checkerboard and progress in the adventure. You have to arrive first otherwise we start again. The single-player mode is also full of many other activities, such as more or less original quests, challenges and other joys. It is necessary to farm Lego 2k Drive with the races and the different activities because obviously you have to improve your level in order to have the right to participate in the following races. Do you see the carrot? We can't play in a straight line, we have to do everything otherwise our progress is blocked. In short, it's artificially adding lifespan by forcing the player to do all the activities in the game. Fortunately the quests and side activities are fun and careful in terms of atmosphere and staging. It’s Lego humor, it’s funny schoolboy, we have a good laugh. After several hours of gaming, my observation is the following. This is not an arcade racing game, it's more of an arcade driving game. You cannot win without effort. You really have to think about all the gameplay possibilities to win.

You can also play Lego 2k Drive in multiplayer. First, you must link your 2K account (or create it) to the console's social account. Frankly it was tedious and I don't see the point, it's supposedly to ensure better online security for the youngest. Anyway, I created my 2K account and was able to join online games. We go shopping one after another, it’s fun and it makes coffee. You can also play 2 players locally in cooperative. I will occasionally test this functionality with my sons.

For aficionados of the Lego universe, you can create your own car from scratch in the garage, it seems very complete but above all technical. Clearly my 6 and 9 year olds have given up on this car building feature for the moment…

My verdict

Lego 2K Drive is a driving game, not a racing game. Precision is important because with the controller in hand you can feel the difference. You have to use all the possibilities of driving to win. Because yes, victory is mandatory to progress in the adventure and hope to win the Celestial Cup. It’s a shame that Lego 2K Drive doesn’t offer driving assistance for little ones as well as a level of difficulty suitable for children/beginners.  Fortunately, the Lego 2k Drive Play Zone, activities and side quests are fun enough for young people to have fun. Once well trained, Lego 2k Drive becomes enjoyable for children. As for me, I'm used to racing games. I find that this Lego 2K Drive is a fun pad in hand, it is also well done on Xbox Series. On the other hand, I'm a little upset about this compulsory farming based on the level required to have the right to participate in the next race. Having a job, a family life, and other activities, I can't necessarily allocate unlimited time to a racing game. At least you get what you pay for.Lego 2k Driveis funny but also hearty if not excellent. A bit like all-you-can-eat restaurants.
