And yes, when we have children (mine are 6 and 9 years old) and we enjoy video games, we sometimes wonder how to introduce our children to video games. In this tutorial I will try to give you some advice and recommendations.

Golden rules and common sense

No screen before the age of 3! It’s quite simple, it’s common sense, but unfortunately I see too many parents giving in to the whims of their kids. I repeat, no screen. No television screens, tablet screens, PC screens and smartphones! 0 screen. Otherwise your child will be addicted to screens but above all he will fall behind in his development and his potential.

You should not play violent video games in the presence of children! This violent and adult content can shock and traumatize children. When your child is with you, we stop playing GTA, Fortnite or Call Of Duty for example. Instead, choose a Nintendo family game or a car racing video game, or a dance or sports game.

We respect thePEGI indicated on the game box(recommended age for video games), even if sometimes it can be illogical. Example, if your child is 7 years old he can play PEGI 3 and PEGI 7 video games. If he is 13 years old he can play PEGI 3, 7 and 12 games!

As with social networks, your child should not be able to play online with strangers before the age of 13! If he is old enough to play online, it is better that he plays on the video game console in the living room and under your supervision! Pay attention to messages sent during sessions and cut off access to headphones and conversations. Also pay attention to private messages received on your teenager's online profile. If you notice an inappropriate message (insults, threats, sexual messages, corruption of minors) report the account to Playstation, Nintendo and Xbox but also and above all,make a report on the PHAROS platform+ filing a complaint with the gendarmerie or police station.

It is also important to respect a limit on your child's video game time per day. I started with 30 minutes until he was 8 years old, then 45 minutes a day, and he will soon be entitled to an hour when he is 10 years old, if of course his school results and his behavior are correct. Also be careful to configure your child's profile correctly and to master parental control.

Introduction to video games

As a preamble, I recommend that you buy a controller adapted to the small size of his hands, so that he does not have too much difficulty when discovering video games. In stores or on the internet, you will easily find a controller for children whether for Xbox, Playstation or Nintendo Switch.

If your child has never touched a controller in his life, I recommend that you introduce him to platform games for children first in 2 dimensions so that he learns the basics, namely moving forward, jumping and solving a puzzle. Then he can move on to 3-dimensional platform video games, so that he can learn to move in all directions. Clearly platform video games, Mario, Sonic, Lego and Paw Patrol are a good way to start with a controller!

For action adventure video games, Crash Bandicoot is a good way to start. I also recommend Rayman, Spyro the Dragon, Luigi’s Mansion, Zelda Breath Of The Wild, Ratchet and Clank, etc.

When it comes to car racing games, the king's choice is obviously Mario Kart 8! It is perfectly suited for children with a beginner mode and more or less assisted driving depending on their level. Other games now provide the same accessibility as Mario Kart, such as Paw Patrol Grand Prix, or Forza Horizon to name just these games.

We can then move on to the category of video games that take motion gaming into account. I am thinking in particular of dance and sports games. Wii Sport is obviously an excellent choice and anyone can discover video games by having fun on Wii Bowling which is played by children and even seniors :) . Motion gaming allows for top accessibility, clearly your body is the video game controller! You can play Just Dance by playing the playlist but you can also sweat on a sports game that will make you lose calories (example ring fit adventure)! For fun, you can also play karaoke video games like Let’s Sing, your kids will love it!

Now let's talk about the category of FPS (first-person shooter games). Obviously it must be non-violent and suitable for children. I can only recommend the Splatoon saga on Nintendo Wii U and Nintendo Switch. It's a paint shooting game, it's fun, colorful and non-violent. It’s a very good entry point for FPS and getting started with the controller.

Now let's talk about fighting video games! To introduce children, I recommend Super Smash Bros! It's funny, fun and easy to get started with. By playing it, we progress and learn new moves to send our opponent away. Many other video games build on the foundations of Super Smash Bros and are also a perfect entry point for fighting games. Afterwards you can continue with Street Fighter, Tekken, Dead Or Alive and Mortal Combat but pay attention to the PEGI of the game! We respect the age recommended by the video game box!

If your child likes building Minecraft seems like a great choice. However, be careful because it has online functionalities. If he likes management games, Animal Crossing is an excellent start before moving on to The Sims, then Sim City, as well as all the other management games like Rollercoaster Tycoon, Theme Hospital etc...

Which console to teach a child to play JV

I'm not going to beat around the bush, the Nintendo Switch is obviously the best video game console perfectly suited for our children. The interface is simple, the games are adapted for their age, the parental controls are effective, and the gameplay with the joy-cons is perfect for little hands. Be careful, however, don't take the Nintendo Switch Lite. It only works in portable mode, it will not be ideal for protecting and monitoring your children when they play! The Nintendo 2DS-3DS is also a good option for introducing children to video games.
