Halo Infinite review

Today I offer you my review of Halo Infinite on Xbox Series X! Spartan is back?

Halo Infinitehas finally arrived for our greatest pleasure on Xbox One, Xbox Series S/X and PC! Having completed the main campaign of the game and having participated in a few online sessions of Halo Infinite, I can now offer you my test!

I was very happy to find our Master Chief aka Spartan John 117. I was afraid of the final result of the game after the failed presentation of Halo Infinite in 2020. Ultimately I am pleasantly surprised by this Halo Infinite, it's a good surprise, even if it does not renew the FPS genre. Thanks to Xbox Game Pass, as always, we have the game available on the day of its release :)

I'll first start with what's wrong with Halo Infinite. I'm not going to beat around the bush and be an Xbox fanboy, Halo Infinite is visually dated. The open world offered in Halo Infinite is far from competing with other games of the moment like Far Cry 6. It's good to offer an open world game, but clearly this one doesn't make you dream visually and doesn't necessarily make you want to explore. I think that, for once, Halo Infinite pays cash for the Xbox One Xbox Series cross-gen policy. You can't do miracles with a 2013 Xbox One as a base console. Fortunately, the interior exploration of ships and buildings is much more visually pleasing. Graphically it is much more inspired but above all much more beautiful than the exterior. Furthermore, why at all costs offer an open world for Halo Inifite? What's the point? Filling missions like in Far Cry?  The previous Halos were not open world and yet they were good. What a shame too that cooperative mode is not yet operational. I would have loved to play the main story of Halo Infinite with a friend.

Okay, now let's move on to the good points of this Halo Infinite. If you have an Xbox Series S/X (with the TV which works well) or a fast PC you will be able to play in 4K up to 120 frames per second and that's really very pleasant. The gameplay therefore becomes much faster, more precise and more nervous. Speaking of gameplay, it's very good, it's 100% Halo. Big new thing in this Infinite Version, our Spartan has a grappling hook! AT first I said to myself “but WTF Master Chief isn’t Spiderman” eh? And yet after a few minutes of adaptation the grappling hook brings a big + gameplay level! It’s so much fun to climb, cling to enemies, steal weapons and vehicles. Really this grappling hook is the good idea of ​​Halo Infinite. For the rest it's pure Halo! It is perfectly playable on the Xbox pad, even if purists will play with the keyboard and mouse.

I found the main campaign of Halo Infinite much more polished than that of Halo 5. The story is both funnier, more touching and much more interesting. The atmosphere is there, the staging is worthy of a Hollywood blockbuster. I even found a touch of Uncharted in its popcorn video game atmosphere, it sometimes looks like a single-player game from Playstation Studios. The music is not to be outdone, as is the convincing dubbing of the characters in French.

Regarding the lifespan, I completed the main campaign in 8-10 hours, but if you want to do all the missions offered in the open world of Halo Infinite you can add a good bunch of hours. That's it for the single player mode.

Now let's tackle Halo Infinite's multiplayer mode. Big news of this latest opus, the multiplayer mode is completely free! No need for the main game to play online.  I find it cool, because it allows many players to discover the Halo saga! After several multiplayer sessions, I can tell you that it's 100% pure Halo! It’s always so funny, so nervous and so exhilarating. Halo's DNA is respected. I'm finding my feet again and I'm still having so much fun. Many players complain about the slow progression system, I personally don't care because I don't play competitive mode at all, I just want to have fun with my friends! If I have one thing to criticize about Halo Infinite's multiplayer mode, it's that it remains very (too) classic! But hey, it’s still very good!

My verdict

Halo Infinite is a very good episode of this legendary Xbox saga. The story is touching, the staging is neat, the gameplay is as good as ever! It’s a very good Halo! On the other hand, I am not convinced by the open world of the game, just as I remain disappointed by the dated graphics of Halo Infinite, the Xbox Series S/X can offer much better. What is certain is that the Halo saga is back on track, I can't wait to discover the rest of the Master Chief's adventures!
