GDemu tutorial save your Sega Dreamcast!
Even if the Sega Dreamcast represents for me the best console of all time, it is unfortunately not immortal and the optical drive gave up the ghost over the years. Here is the GDemu tutorial, your Sega Dreamcast will thank you!
The brilliant GDemu project was born in 2008 and I invite you to go to the original project websiteGDemu.wordpress.comin order to support its creator. GDemu is an internal SD card reader for the Sega Dreamcast that replaces the venerable optical drive of the Sega Dreamcast.
It took the optical drive on my Sega Dreamcast to break down for me to take the plunge. The least we can say is that I don’t regret it.
Today many GDemu clones are appearing on the web and really for 25/30€ you shouldn't hesitate. I added a 128 GB microSD card for €18 in order to be comfortable in terms of storage and that's it.
Teardown of the Sega Dreamcast
N.B: Prerequisites You need a Sega Dreamcast VA1 (it is marked under the console). A GDemu and an SD/MicroSD card
First of all, I would like to point out that I am a big fan of DIY, but guess what? I got there like a big ^^. First floor we unplug the 33k modem from the Sega Dreamcast. Then we remove the 4 screws from the console then the 3 screws from the optical unit of the Sega Dreamcast. We then plug in the small GDemu card in place of the optical unit.
SD card setup
On a computer we format our MicroSD card (or SD card) in fat 32. We then go to the siteGDemuin order to recover GDmenu O.6. We unzip this file on the SD card. We add files called 2, 3, 4, 5, and so on, depending on the number of games we have. I strongly recommend that you use games in the original GDI format to enjoy an optimal experience on your Sega Dreamcast.
Reassembling the console
Once your SD card is configured, plug it into the GDemu, reassemble the Sega Dreamcast then turn it on. We arrive in the Dreamcast menu, we launch the “disc” then we arrive on the GDemu operating system with our games. I have tested many games and everything works perfectly :) Isn't life beautiful??? Your Sega Dreamcast no longer makes noise, it is no longer zoned ^^ it’s a treat :)
My verdict on the GDemu
In the absence of a Sega Dreamcast Mini, this GDEmu gave my console a good boost :p For the price (25-30€) it's worth it. This GDemu allows you to effectively replace the faulty optical drive of the Sega Dreamcast. Thanks to the SD card, loading times are faster, the console is silent and we can store all our games in the console. So imagine my Sega Dreamcast with more storage than the Nintendo Switch ^^. Joking aside, GDemu allows total dezoning of the console, the games work perfectly, it's amazing! I regret not having installed it before on my console :p
For the service tips ^^ I would like to point out that the games that I added to the storage of my Sega Dreamcast are games that I have in my game library :p
