Dead Island 2 review on PC

In this article, I present to you my review of Dead Island 2 on PC! It will bleed/dismember/crush!

Hello everyone!

I'm K and we're meeting under the Los Angeles sun, not to sunbathe but rather to get to the heart of the matter.

After its announcement in 2014, we no longer expected thisDead Island 2but here it is finally on PC, Xbox Series S/X, Xbox One, PS5 and PS4. So what does it say?

Seven months have passed since the first episode and the epidemic has spread to California, which is placed in quarantine. At the start of the game, six characters with different abilities are offered to us even if in absolute terms the variations are minimal. Be careful, however, the choice of character is final.

The storyline is rather conventional and the (entertaining) story does not change depending on the chosen protagonist (all the characters are immune to the virus). The throughline is a vague “I have to find my brother” which launches the main quest which will take us on a journey through Los Angeles. We advance in a semi-open environment, with its share of weapons/materials, weapons that we can recycle, to recover resources or improve. Positive point, we can upgrade (i.e. increase the damage) the weapons we like, to be able to continue playing with them. Let's talk about weapons, the choice is substantial, they all have a different feeling and are more or less adapted to each type of zombie. As you could see in the game trailer, we can customize them with different effects (fire, electricity, acid…) and these really affect the zombies! Friends of gore and dismemberment, welcome! We crush, we slice, we burst, in short you understand it's gory and it's not a game to be played by everyone.

For the combat, we unfortunately feel a lack of depth after a certain time. Of course, we cut the zombies up piece by piece but we always find ourselves using the same type of action (i.e. the jumping kick which is the most effective movement in the game). There is a counter or dodge system, which, done in time, allows you to chain together a powerful blow, killing a zombie in a single stylish blow, different depending on the weapon used, but it lacks a little depth.

Technically the graphics and effects of all kinds are achieved on PC, no slowdown observed in the face of hordes of walking corpses. I did notice a few collision bugs, nothing too bad. But the monsters that appear/disappear as soon as the camera is no longer on them is more problematic, let's hope that the day one patch fixes this. What is certain is that Dead Island 2 is well optimized on PC! The console versions also seem neat according to other tests from the video game press.

Special mention to the almost flawless soundtrack (“Drown” by Karen O & Danger Mouse joined my Spotify playlist) and a few rock tracks for the boss fights.

My verdict

In the end, Dead Island 2 is fun to play even if we feel that the postponements have diminished its potential. We're never really surprised, we would have liked more depth in the gameplay and innovation.

You reach the end of the main adventure in around 15 hours, more if you do the side quests. I almost forgot to mention that you can play the game in cooperative mode in order to kill zombies together. If you like this old-school romp style of gameplay, Dead Island 2 will be your perfect gaming companion! “Oldies but goodies” Or “old but not obsolete” as the legendary Arnold Schwarzenegger would say
