Buy your video game in a boxed or digital version? Here is my opinion!

In the era of optical fiber, all-digital video games Steam, Xbox Game Pass, Playstation Now, Nintendo E-shop, and company, I give you my opinion on buying your video game in boxed version as well as in digital form

The more time passes, the more the video game in physical version (boxed version with the disc or game cartridge) is in the spotlight. But today, it is necessary to differentiate the PC and console market, where the situation is far from being similar.

The state of the PC video game market

On PC it has become almost impossible to find your game in physical version. The Steam gaming system has simply cannibalized the boxed versions of video games. It must be said that Steam, with its aggressive policy of video game sales at €4/5, hit the mark and killed the physical market. All video game publishers have joined Steam, and others such as Blizzard, Electronic Arts or Ubisoft have created their own platforms (Origin, UPlay, Battlenet). These virtual gaming platforms are a real goose that lays golden eggs! Given the prices charged, we found ourselves with hundreds of games in our libraries! It’s clear that on these platforms we make big savings. But there are still disadvantages to all-digital! We cannot lend our games! We can't even resell them! The second-hand market is simply impossible! Let's not forget the most important thing too. We are not all lucky enough to have optical fiber and given the colossal size of today's games (between 50 to 100 gigabytes), it can take several hours or even days to obtain a digital copy of the game with a simple ADSL connection.

The console video game business

On console, the situation is completely different. Fortunately, it is still possible today to buy video games in physical versions in stores. I highly recommend it! For what? It's paradoxical and completely stupid, but on console, a video game in a digital version is almost systematically more expensive than in a boxed version! Don't look for a logical explanation, there isn't one... It is often possible to obtain your day-one game for €45/55 thanks to competition from stores, instead of €60/70 for the same game in dematerialized version. There is also an essential element to take into account. By purchasing your physical game in stores it is possible, once the game is finished, to be able to resell it, or lend it to a friend. Conversely, dematerialized games prohibit the resale and loan of games, it's really ugly! For me, on consoles, we absolutely must currently favor games in boxed versions!MAJ:Be careful, however, the situation changes greatly on the Xbox side! With its new Xbox Game Pass formula at €10/month, Microsoft offers around a hundred Xbox One and 360 games for free download! Even better, its upcoming games like Sea Of Thieves, State Of Decay 2, Forza Horizon 4 and Halo will also be offered in this package! The calculation is quick, a new game is €70 and this €10 XboX Game Pass package is definitely worth it, and can claim to replace the games in physical version…

My frank but above all committed opinion!

On PC as you know, digital has crushed physical gaming, so it's Game Over. On consoles, on the other hand, please buy your video games in boxed versions while you still can for several reasons! It's cheaper for the moment, but above all you can lend your games and resell them! Don't forget also that independent video game stores live (or rather survive) on the second-hand market. If video games were to become completely dematerialized, many video game stores will unfortunately close their doors... I have no illusions, Microsoft with its new Xbox Game Pass formula at €10/month has just struck a major blow by offering all the next games it will publish in this package! Dematerialized gaming finally becomes accessible on console with this aggressive offer. There is no doubt that Sony and Nintendo will react and offer a similar service in a few years, so it will be the death of games in cartridge and disc format...
