Batocera the perfect retrogaming OS!

In this gaming file, I invite you to discover Batocera, the retrogaming operating system! To try it is to adopt it 🙂

I had already been using the very good OS for many yearsRecalboxon my venerable Raspberry Pi 3b. It wasn't bad but I had bugs which persisted, particularly on the display of games on a 4/3 PC screen but also on the wifi. I had to fiddle with the command lines and clearly it wasn't really my hobby.

I had heard (good) talk aboutBatoceraand I said to myself that I was going to test it on my raspberry! After all, I had nothing to lose.

The Batocera installation

Like Recalbox, installing Batocera Linux is easy. Format your Micro SD card (or USB key or hard drive). We install the Batocera image that corresponds to our machine (raspberry, Odroid, Intel Nuc, PC…) and finally we start our machine with it!

During the first startup, a few emulators are installed and you quickly arrive in the menu of the Batocera Linux operating system. Everything is configurable using the controller (I use a wired Xbox 360 pad). We adjust our game display (several resolutions and filters are available), we configure our wifi and wired network and let's play the music!

To add all the emulators you want on your Batocera, I strongly recommend that you follow the awesomeTimeoon twitter but above all to go to histheminicaketv websitewhich explains how to simply add the emulators.

Thanks to these tutorials, Batocera Linux works perfectly on my raspberry pi 3, but also on my Intel Nuc i3!

Using Batocera

As explained above, it’s childish. A simple controller is enough to navigate, configure and play different games regardless of the emulator used. It’s truly plug and play. We assign all the buttons on our controller, or our arcade stick and it's OK! Many controllers (wired and bluetooth) and arcade sticks are compatible.

To add your games, we go to our local network, we select our Batocera machine and we copy/paste our roms into the folders of the different consoles. You can also use FTP (file transfer protocol) software such as WinSCP for the heaviest games. N.B: Don't forget that you need to have the original games to play your roms, you rascals!!!

To add the game covers, simply create an account on the websitescreenscraperand then enter your password identifier in our Batocera Linux software

Do you love hits like Playstation and Xbox? No problem, just create your account onretroachievements.orgthen you will need to enter your username and password in the Batocera software! The joy of success is yours!!!

Clearly, used on a daily basis, Batocera Linux really acts as a homemade retrogaming Netflix! It's fluid, easy to use, we save our games, it's flawless! The emulation is perfect! Obviously the number of functional emulators will depend on your machine. To synthesize, with a Raspberry type system we can emulate up to the Nintendo 64. The Sega Dreamcast works but it slows down. Forget the Sega Saturn, however, you have to switch to a PC type machine!

With a small PC equipped with an Intel Core i3 8 gigabytes of RAM and a small graphics card (or integrated Intel chip) you will be able to run Gamecube, Wii, Saturn, PS2 games without problem! I tested Batocera with my Intel Nuc i3, it’s just a treat!!! It runs any game up to the Wii!

Imagine, with a big PC running Batocera, no retrogaming game (up to the PS3 and Wii U) will resist it!

Do something for the planet!

I'm getting my basic environmentalism done! Don't throw your old PCs in the trash! Keep them! Recycle your old PC towers by installing Batocera Linux as your primary operating system! You will transform your old, ugly, dusty PC into a top-notch retrogaming docking station :) . You will make people happy at home! Nothing like a retrogaming session to have a good evening with friends ^^

Here is my verdict! Batocera WIN!!!! This retrogaming operating system is a must have! Install it urgently on your old PC lying around in the corner of the attic or cellar! You will have a blast with family and friends! At worst, you will make a nice original gift by offering your old Batocera PC to your loved ones. Batocera is very easy to install, very intuitive to use. I love Batocera! I'm very happy to be able to play my Sega Saturn and Sega Dreamcast games again on my Intel Nuc I3. I was sad, because my old consoles no longer worked due to their old age (lens problem). But thanks to Batocera,  the games of my childhood and adolescence are emulated to perfection! So I found a smile again 😀

Really try Batocera! You will adopt it very quickly! Test it on a USB key, there’s no risk 🙂
